Introduction

Installed in Montevideo and in several cities in the interior, the Universidad Católica del Uruguay is the oldest private university in the country and the most widespread geographically.

Initially founded in 1882 by the first Archbishop of Montevideo, Mons. Mariano Soler reopened and entrusted to the Society of Jesus in 1985, the Catholic University of Uruguay is the main work of the Catholic Church in the field of Uruguayan higher education. Her commitment to academic excellence, ideological pluralism, ecumenism, and interreligious dialogue, have made her one of the fundamental actors in the cultural life of the country.

From the moment of its birth, the Catholic University of Uruguay set itself the challenge of being a different option in university education. This led her to work in previously neglected areas and to play an innovative role in the development of new educational methods and in the evangelization of culture. Today, with eight thousand students in its classrooms and several dozen academic programs underway, it is experiencing a stage of consolidation and faces the challenge of responding to the new requirements of Uruguayan society.

The communication of knowledge, human formation, and the diffusion of culture are our university way of serving.
