About the College of Business


Established as the Division of Commerce in 1947 to serve the needs of returning veterans, today the College of Business is one of five degree-granting colleges at Southern Miss with 80 faculty members spanning multiple campuses and educating more than 2,400 undergraduate and graduate students.

The College of Business is fully accredited by AACSB International-The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. This organization is the premier accrediting agency for collegiate management education worldwide.

With small classes taught by full-time business professors in a friendly atmosphere, the College of Business contributes to students' personal and professional development and provides a solid foundation for an exciting career in business and related fields anywhere in the world.

On the undergraduate level, the college offers degrees in accounting, business administration, economics, fashion merchandising, finance, international business, marketing, management, management information systems and tourism management.

On the graduate level, the college offers the Master of Business Administration and Master of Professional Accountancy programs.

The Department of Economic Development offers graduate work leading to a Master of Science in Economic Development and Doctor of Philosophy in International Development.Master’s Program The goal of the Economic Development program is to assist students in acquiring professional competency in the concepts, skills, working tools, and creative approaches essential to thoseinvolved in the field of economic development, whether at the community, state, regional, national, or international level.Admission Requirements:

Have a 3.0 (4.0 scale) grade point average over the last two years of the student’s undergraduate studies. Submit GRE scores. The Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) may be submitted in place of the GRE. Students whose native language is not English must achieve a TOEFL score of 560 or more. Provide three letters of recommendation from persons qualified to assess the applicant’s readiness for graduate study. The letters should be sent to the department. In exceptional cases, students may be admitted conditionally. Such students must earn a 3.0 on the first nine (9) semester hours of coursework numbered 500 or above or on all coursework takenwhile completing this nine (9) hour requirement in order to qualify for regular admission. The program emphasizes both the research and theory framework as well as the practical application of workforce learning and performance. The goal of the Workforce Training and Development master’s program is to prepare students to improve human performance, balance individual and organizational needs, build knowledge capital within the organization, and determine the return on investment of training programs.

Students learn to think strategically to design and develop interventions that will positively impact workplace learning and performance. This program is designed to expand instructional opportunities beyond traditional boundaries of on-campus class delivery. The Dual Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Science Sports Management dual degree program is a collaboration between the College of Business and the College of Health.

The MBA/Sports Management curriculum will be taught between the School of Human Performance and Recreation and the College of Business. This dual degree will afford gifted students a unique combination of sports industry experience and business knowledge, skills, and abilities relative to assuming an executive sports business person. The objective of the graduate (M.P.A.) curriculum is to provide more depth and breadth in accounting and in the preparation for professional careers in both the public accounting and management accounting areas. [+]

The School of Accountancy and Information Systems within the College of Business offers the Master of Professional Accountancy (M.P.A.) degree program. The objective of the graduate (M.P.A.) curriculum is to provide more depth and breadth in accounting and related subjects that can be accomplished in a four-year program. Enrollment in the program is limited to those students who show a high probability of success. The program leading to the MPA is essentially the culmination of a five-year program. A student who earns the bachelor's degree with a major in accounting may normally complete the MPA program with one year's additional work. A minimum of 30 hours of graduate work is required.ObjectiveThe objective of the MPA curriculum is to provide more depth and breadth in accounting and related subjects that can be accomplished in a four-year program.
