Introduction

With around 2,800 students and 650 teaching staff, Zurich University of the Arts is one of the major universities of the arts in Europe. The study and research programme covers the areas of design, film, fine arts, music, dance, theatre, transdisciplinary studies, and the teaching of arts and design. The university also has many venues for exhibitions and performances, where the results of the education provided can be shown in public.

Zurich University of the Arts is part of the Zurich Universities of Applied Sciences and Arts (ZFH), and is a state university with its own legal entity.

Bachelor’s and Master’s studies

A degree programme resulting in a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree lasts three years, and can be taken in the following subject areas at ZHdK: Art Education, Contemporary Dance, Design, Film, Music, Theatre.

Master’s degree programmes ending in a Master of Arts (MA) degree generally require three to four semesters of full-time study. The following Master of Arts degrees are offered at ZHdK: Art Education, Dance, Composition and Theory, Design, Film, Fine Arts, Music Performance, Specialized Music Performance, Music Pedagogy, Theatre, Transdisciplinary Studies.

There is also a wide range of continuing education available, resulting in the following qualifications: Master of Advanced Studies (MAS), Diploma of Advanced Studies (DAS) and Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS).

Master of Arts in Dance

The Master of Arts in Dance offers two specializations: Choreography, on one hand, Teaching and Coaching Dance Professionals on the other. It builds the choreographic and teaching skills needed to work with dance professionals and to qualify for the relevant professions. Coursework includes choreographic methods, teaching skills, and artistic research with a view to developing an individual artist or teaching profile. The programme promotes interdisciplinary collaboration and helps students to establish a sustainable network within the international field of dance. [+]

Master of Arts in Design

The focus of the master's program is the qualification of students for a complex work environment, be it in the field of practice / company, placement / communication or research / innovation. Master students not only deepen and broaden their knowledge and skills, they also prepare their careers. The course of study and the own master project are correspondingly individual and project-oriented. Master theses can also be created with partners from business, science or education. The personal workstation at the ZHdK promotes a deeper professional discourse with fellow students and lecturers. A rich infrastructure of laboratories, workshops and media offers space for experiments and realization of one's own work. [+]

In the Master of Arts in Design, designers and personalities from design-related areas develop their mastery and achieve professional excellence. The focus of the master's program is the research-oriented working and thinking along the own design project. The combination of high individual responsibility, reflexive and interdisciplinary thinking, an own design attitude as well as entrepreneurial action play as crucial a role in the qualification for the further career steps as the ability to connect to international practice or higher education.

There are two separate Master of Arts in Music Performance programmes aiming at different fields of study:

The Master in Music Performance offers a broad profile in instrumental and vocal concert performance. The Master in Specialized Music Performance offers three specializations: solo performance, orchestral performance, including orchestral piano, and chamber music, including collaborative piano.
