Tracing its history back to 1897, Soongsil initially opened its doors in Pyongyang as the first modern educational institution for Koreans. It was also the first national university that was founded on Christian principles. Since its establishment, Soongsil University has continuously endeavored to live up to its name - to strive for and to revere the truth.
Soongsil University's goal is to foster and nurture future leaders who will contribute to and serve our church, society and the nation. To achieve this purpose, our students are provided with a balanced curriculum of theoretical and practical education based on the principles of Christianity. Under the school's founding motto of passionate aspiration for the truth and service to the people, Soongsil University has been with our people throughout the best and worst of times and will continue its proud legacy into the future.
There are many people at Soongsil University that practice the founding ideas of 'Truth and Service.' Soongsil University by name means that it reveres the Word of God and is a devout Christian University that has been focused on character building education: it has been providing the students with liberal arts classes that teach humanity and justice. It has also held numerous club activities through which students can learn Christian principles and the value of service while developing their abilities. Moreover, different types of Chapel programs that incorporate dancing, play, and CCM are provided along with religion counseling.
