The University of Siena is one of the oldest universities in Europe. Its history has evolved alongside Tuscany’s cultural tradition since the Middle Ages.

Accommodation: in Siena there are different housing options, from university halls of residence to private location (individual/shared apartments or single/double rooms). The best way to find an appropriate accommodation is to look for a room in Siena after your arrival, with the support of the orientation offices.
The university canteens are run by the DSU-Toscana (Regional Authority for Higher Education Grants),
which offers students low cost, complete meals, with a varied menu. In order to have access to university canteens, students need a smart card issued upon enrolment.
In collaboration with the Regional Authority for Higher Education Grants (Azienda Regionale per il Diritto allo Studio Universitario – ARDSU) and Siena University Sports Centre (CUS), the University promotes sports for students by offering courses for free or at reduced rates in: basketball, football, volleyball, rugby, judo, weight training, fencing and tennis.
Erasmus Student Network (ESN) Siena is a non-profit international student organization. Their mission is to represent international students, thus providing opportunities for cultural understanding and self-development under the principle of Students Helping Students.
The Buddy System is a programme promoted by the University of Siena in collaboration with ESN Siena GES, by which incoming exchange students are matched with students of the University of Siena
The main purpose of this programme is to assist exchange students with practical information on living and studying in Siena and to facilitate their integration in the Italian academic life and the student community.
The student tutor is an experienced student who is available to other students for information related to the organization of the university teaching, facilities, and services.
The tutoring service consists of activities where student tutors are involved in university life through:
- orientations for high school students
- giving information and tutorial support through interviews, telephone contacts or e-mail addressed to university students
- welcoming new students and participating in initiatives promoted by the university and its departments
- taking part in other orientation and tutoring activities to be decided upon with various bodies of the institution
The University of Siena awards first cycle, second cycle and single long cycle degrees in the following 15 Departments:

Furthermore, several interfaculty degrees are available. Postgraduate education at the University of Siena is carried out in postgraduate schools. Vocational and advanced master’s programmes (third cycle), training, advanced training and refresher courses and summer schools, while postgraduate research is performed in doctoral schools.
The University of Siena has set up Doctoral Programmes for young people with particular expertise in the field of research who wish to obtain the qualification of PhD. The Doctoral Programmes offer a wide variety of programmes on specific scientific topics, carried out at the Santa Chiara Graduate School.
Admission to the Doctoral Programmes is subject to a selection process, which is open to those in possession of an Italian second cycle degree (or degree awarded under the previous Italian system) or an equivalent qualification awarded by a foreign university.
Scientific research is carried out within the University’s departments, which are organized into one or more research sectors according to their aims or methods. Within each sector, research activities are launched and coordinated and proposals are defined for the establishment and organization of doctoral research programmes. The consultancy and research activities carried out at the University for third parties are also usually performed within the departments.
