Introduction

The Philosophical Faculty is one of the four Faculties at the University of Eastern Finland. The Faculty emphasises internationality and multidisciplinarity and works for the advancement of education for the public good according to the principles of the University of Eastern Finland. Its special mission is to conduct scientific research and offer research-based academic education in the fields of educational sciences and psychology, home economics and craft science, linguistics and cultural studies.

The Faculty serves not only Eastern Finland but the whole country and the international scientific community as well. In certain areas of education, theology, languages and culture the Faculty has an expressly defined national mission. The Faculty also strives to provide its services to the society as a whole by providing expertise and education in the fields it represents for the advancement of the social, economic and cultural well-being of Eastern Finland in particular.

Master in English Language and Culture

This program, taught entirely in English and aimed at international applicants, seeks to provide an opportunity to study English from a variety of literary and linguistic perspectives. The degree consists of coursework and a research thesis. The objectives of the program include an in-depth understanding of the multifacetedness of contemporary English studies; increased awareness of key debates in contemporary linguistics and literary studies; and an ability to carry out independent research. MASTERS IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND CULTURE

This programme, taught entirely in English and aimed at international applicants, seeks to provide an opportunity to study English from a variety of literary and linguistic perspectives. The degree consists of coursework and a research thesis. The objectives of the programme include an in-depth understanding of the multifacetedness of contemporary English studies; increased awareness of key debates in contemporary linguistics and literary studies; and an ability to carry out independent research. There are overall 15 study places available for international students.

During their studies, students will specialize in linguistics or literary and cultural studies. The department has internationally recognized areas of strength in both linguistics and literary studies. In linguistics, these include dialectology, language contact, language variation and change, pragmatics, and bilingualism. In literary and cultural studies, the department's areas of strength include postcolonial and ethnic literature, American literature, popular fiction, and contemporary fiction.... [-]

MASTER IN EARLY LANGUAGE EDUCATION FOR INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION

The two-year International Master's Degree Program in Early Language Education for Intercultural Communication (120 ECTS) prepares students to teach foreign languages to children. Special emphasis is laid on early age intercultural communication competence.

The general strength of the program is generated by its didactics and methodology relying upon a balanced combination of theory and practice to be used in a future work as a teacher or educator. The program facilitates gaining a multicultural view on educational issues and sharing personal/collective experience in intercultural settings. MASTER IN LEARNING, TEACHING AND COUNSELLING IN INTERCULTURAL CONTEXT

This two-year Master’s programme is a multidisciplinary programme focusing on different study fields related to education. The curriculum of the programme has a global focus and is not limited to one particular research or study field related to education. Instead, it offers a thematic walkthrough through diverse disciplines related to education and pedagogy. Students can flexibly choose their thematic modules according to their personal interests and needs. Students may focus on Adult Education and Counselling, Primary Education, or Science Education.

The thematic module Lifelong Learning focuses on the basics of education, lifelong learning, knowledge society and development of working life. It offers comparative perspectives to questions pertaining to lifelong learning and expertise, educational policy and educational research. MASTER IN LINGUISTIC DATA SCIENCES

Language use and linguistic data are essential in various disciplines today and in all areas of our digitalized society. It is widely recognized that society needs people who understand language as data, who can work analytically and can analyze linguistic data systematically. This Master’s degree programme focuses on the interfaces between languages and digitalization in today’s world.

This programme, taught entirely in English, provides an opportunity to study language in today’s digitalized society from a variety of perspectives. These consist of sociolinguistics, language technology and translation. The core of this programme consists of a set of courses in empirical linguistics (syntax, phonetics, pragmatics, sociolinguistics, contact linguistics, translation studies) that offer various areas of specialization for the students. In addition, we cross disciplinary boundaries and collaborate with computer science as well as data sciences and statistics. This means that students are encouraged to choose from optional packages that be used to tailor the programme to suit individual needs.
