Introduction
The Master of Science in Sustainability Management will help students understand the urgency and the challenges in developing sustainable businesses, equip students with useful theoretical frameworks and practical tools, and offer students real-life experience in search of feasible yet impactful solutions toward long-term sustainability.
Students will become familiar with the recent policies, regulations, technologies and best practices in sustainability management. The MS in Sustainability Management program challenges the students to think about what sustainable development is, and to understand the trade-offs between different solutions in terms of environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues and financial impact. Students are expected to undertake a consulting project to measure the sustainability performance of a real company and to advise on its sustainability strategy. Upon completion of the program, students will be ready to embark on a career that contributes to a more sustainable world.

Curriculum
The 36 credit hours (12 courses) required for the MS in Sustainability Management degree must include the following courses:
- SUMA 5000 Introduction to Sustainability Management (3 credits)
- SUMA 5100 Sustainability Leadership for People Planet and Profit (3 credits)
- SUMA 5200 Sustainable Design and Operations Management (3 credits)
- SUMA 5300 Sustainability, Strategy and Decision Making (3 credits)
- SUMA 5400 Circular Economy (3 credits)
- SUMA 5500 Law and Governance on Sustainability (3 credits)
- SUMA 6100 ESG Practices in the Market (3 credits)
- SUMA 6200 Sustainability in Action (3 credits)
- BUSN 5200 Basic Finance for Managers (3 credits)
- ENMG 6120 Waste Management and Pollution Control (3 credits)
- MNGT 5990 Corporate Responsibility and Society (3 credits)
One additional 3 credit hour elective is required. Students may choose an elective from courses offered by Walker Business School or the Environmental Management program. For students joining the program without an accredited business degree, they have to take BUSN 5000 Business as an elective.
Emphasis on Environmental Sustainability
Students who are interested in environmental sustainability could choose to add an Emphasis on Environmental Sustainability, offered by the Department of Biological Sciences. Students will be able to identify the basic scientific principle of ecology and biodiversity and the way human systems integrate with natural systems, conduct research and present findings on selected environmental sustainability topics, identify the limits of science and law in resolving environmental disputes, review managerial, technological and policy approaches to natural resource management and effectively communicate energy-related legislation and policies to stakeholders.
The emphasis includes the following courses:
- ENMG 5400 Environmental Sustainability (3 hours)
- ENMG 5410 Environmental Ethics and Decision Making (3 hours)
- ENMG 5420 Natural Resource Management and Sustainability (3 hours)
- ENMG 5430 Energy Policy and Sustainability (3 hours)
Program Outcome
Students who complete this program will be able to:
- Explain the concept of sustainability and the theories underpinning sustainability management.
- Identify the opportunities and challenges for a company in line with the governmental policies and regulations regarding sustainable development.
- Analyze different business projects, practices and technologies used in sustainability development and compare the trade-offs between different solutions.
- Measure and critically evaluate the sustainability performance of a company.
- Develop a sustainability strategy for a company in line with the triple bottom line.
