The Master's Degree course in Area and Global Studies for International Cooperation aims to provide the skills necessary to operate effectively in the various professions that constitute the field of international cooperation and area studies. To this end, the curriculum of the master's degree program includes activities aimed at:

• the acquisition of advanced knowledge in the fields of international cooperation and politics; political, economic and social organization of specific geographic areas as well as the juridical, historical and anthropological dimensions that distinguish them, in addition to global processes and phenomena;
• the interpretation of social, economic, territorial, environmental and cultural transformations, also seen in their gender dimension;
• the preparation of international cooperation projects and the evaluation of results.

The training offer of the course is based on a general profile and three area specialization profiles (Africa, the Americas, and Asia). While the general profile offers the methodological tools and the skills needed to understand global phenomena and international cooperation, the specialization profiles aim to provide students with the skills necessary for the in-depth knowledge of the areas from historical, anthropological, economic, socio-political, juridical, cultural and linguistic points of view.

The course includes external activities, such as internships and work placements, at universities and research centres, central and local administrations, international organizations and non-governmental organizations working in the field of cooperation, territorial policies, immigration policies and cultural integration.

The courses, which follow and develop the experiences gained in the best universities in the world, are aimed at creating specialists in:

• International cooperation activities. Graduates, in addition to gaining basic economic, legal and socio-political knowledge to operate in the countries in which the cooperation is implemented, will be able to specialize their training with reference to specific issues and countries;
• The analysis of local and global political and cultural processes. At the end of their Master's Degree students will have acquired a series of skills that will allow them to identify the political, cultural and institutional actors of other countries and to understand the trends of the social, political and economic transformations taking place;
• The analysis of the institutional and socio-economic conditions of the areas in which cooperation activities are carried out. The acquired competencies include the knowledge of economic and legal problems related to the operation of companies in the transnational markets.

To encourage the acquisition of these skills and, in particular, the development of applicative skills, the Master's Degree program uses interactive forms of teaching such as:

1. workshops, where learning is verified through the evaluation of a product (country studies, sector studies, guidelines for public policies, project evaluations) prepared by the students with the guidance of the professors;
2. discussion seminars on globalization processes conducted with a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approach; seminars of a strongly applied nature in which the transmission of skills takes place mainly through the application of the methodologies learned, to concrete case studies and to the analysis of public policies;
3. internships at local bodies, NGOs operating in Italy and abroad, international organizations that offer the student, while still in the Master's program, the opportunity to engage with the outside world, to verify the adequacy of the skills acquired with respect to the demands of the workplace, and to develop, through the comparison between the concepts learned and the realities encountered in the field, an autonomy of judgment about the complex problems that was the object of their studies;
4. international exchanges in the context of Erasmus+ agreements and other international university cooperation agreements which allow students to enhance their knowledge of the country studied by spending a few months in the field to carry out their final dissertations and/or carry out internships in companies and institutions operating in that country.

How to apply

Students with an Italian qualification

Exclusively for the Master's Degree courses belonging to the Departments of Culture, Politics, and Society, students must obtain the authorization (i.e. nulla osta) issued by the professors' board that certifies during an interview with the candidate his/her possession of the curricular requisites allowing the enrolment:

The nulla osta must be upload in your my.unito: from the "Iscrizioni" menu, select the entry "Allegati carriera" and upload the document.

Students with foreign qualifications

If you have a qualification issued by a non-Italian High School or University, you are required to apply through Apply@UniTo according to the following deadlines:

• 1st call: from the 1st to 28th February 2018
• 2nd call: from the 15th March to 30th April 2018

Reserved to EU, EU equivalent applicants and N0N-EU applicants legally residing in Italy:

• third call: from 15th May to 15th June 2018
• fourth call: from 10th July to 10th August 2018 (only for the first cycle and one long cycle degree programmes)
• fifth call: from 20th June to 10th July 2018 (only for second cycle degree programmes)
