Introduction
The Master’s study program “Sustainable and Energy-efficient Buildings” is designed for persons that graduated from the Bachelor’s study programs in Construction Engineering, Construction Technology, Building Engineering Systems or Energy Engineering and those willing to gain knowledge and be able to systematically analyze, assess and design building engineering systems, building micro-climate, building conformity with the principles of sustainable construction, energy costs, renewable energy source technology, system management principles, energy accumulation, transmission and consumption technology, perform their maintenance and be able to carry out the building energy efficiency inspection.
Studies are usually conducted in the evenings, but some academic classes take place during the day.
Values
1. Growing demand in specialists understanding the principles of sustainable construction
There has been an increasing demand for qualified specialists analyzing, modeling, and designing advanced building engineering systems, having knowledge of the principles of sustainable construction and being able to systematically think and solve the problems related to thermal comfort, building inside environment micro-climate parameters, safety assurance, and similar engineering problems.
2. Studies oriented towards the present and future market demands
The study program is oriented towards research capacity and systematic thinking by maintaining the strong nature of applied sciences. The study program is related to the transition to zero carbon dioxide emission construction, energy-generating buildings, and integration of advanced, energy-efficient systems in the buildings, as well as sustainable harmony with the environment.
3. Broad career opportunities
Graduates may conduct research in R&D institutions, be managers, the highest category designers, or BIM project managers in design or manufacturing enterprises and organizations engaged in the building energy assessment, design of engineering systems, expert, consultancy, construction execution, and supervision activities. The graduates may also establish and develop independent construction businesses, work in international companies in the field of engineering equipment and system development.
4. Demand for specialists in the market
Having graduated from the Master’s study program “Sustainable and Energy-Efficient Buildings”, the graduates are able to work in many Lithuanian enterprises, such as AB “Kauno Energija”, UAB “Caverion Lietuva”, UAB “Vitaterma”, UAB “Enso Projects”, UAB “Terma”, UAB “Veda”, UAB “Rusnė”, UAB “ClimPro”, as well as in foreign companies, for instance, “ENER-G Controls” (Great Britain).
5. Smooth study process
Lecturers that take part in the study process are not only professionals, but they also apply flexible lecture schedules, consultancy times and they try to make students interested and involved in scientific research.
Admissions

Student’s skills
- Able to create spatial mathematical models of buildings and engineering systems for analysis of energy efficiency processes, lifecycle, thermal comfort, and air quality;
- Able to prepare and propose scientifically justified, targeted, and competitive project solutions for engineering systems in buildings and their management taking into consideration construction environment, restricting conditions, aesthetical and architectural aspects, economic factors, and planned operational conditions;
- Able to plan and perform analytical, modeling, and experimental research related to the energy efficiency research of buildings and engineering systems, to process, assess and interpret the obtained results;
- Able to design microclimate maintenance systems (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning), smoke ventilation, and other engineering systems for buildings, apply traditional, new, and original solutions, integrate technical innovations, and document scientific achievements.
Career Opportunities
“The demand for young, energetic specialists able to change and improve on a regular basis has been currently increasing given the rapidly rising advancement of technology. I tend to notice that these young specialists, having graduated from their Master’s studies, are more courageous in taking up more difficult tasks and more confident. I believe that knowledge gained during the Master’s studies not only broadened their knowledge, but also taught them to search, analyze, and find original engineering solutions which are in line with the latest trends.” – Konstantinas Marcinkus, Director at UAB “Terma”.
You may become
1. Expert in energy performance in buildings
Analyzing building projects, certifying their energy performance, preparing the necessary documentation, and communicating with customers and designers of other parts of the building is the main role of these experts.
2. Sustainable building expert
Sustainability principles are ever-expanding, and these experts can properly implement them in buildings and advise on the necessary changes.
3. Researcher in the field of microclimate, sustainable development of buildings, the energy efficiency of buildings
Researchers in this specialization plan and conduct research, evaluate their results, publish them, and ultimately present them at scientific conferences.
