Mariano Gálvez University of Guatemala

The Mariano Gálvez University is a private, independent, non-profit higher education institution that operates in accordance with the laws of its institutional nature, which was approved on January 29, 1966, by the Supreme University Council of the University of San Carlos de Guatemala. Its name honors the distinguished statesman, hero, and illustrious jurisconsult Doctor José Mariano Gálvez (Head of the State of Guatemala 1831-1838), founder of the Academy of Studies and reformer of Guatemalan education, who promoted important innovations in all orders of the life of the state. The improvement of public instruction is attributed to him. He fought for the teaching to be secular, he was the founder of the National Library and Museum, he respected individual laws and guarantees, freedom of the press, and emission of thought.

In accordance with its Institutional principles, the Mariano Gálvez University serves, essentially, the ethical, scientific, professional and technical training of students, through the integrated exercise of teaching, research and service to the community and normative, academic independence, administrative, disciplinary and economic; to the conservation and development of science and culture as a universal heritage; to the promotion of research as a source of knowledge and progress and to the study of national problems in order to contribute to their solution.

The ideals that inspired its founders remain valid, as it is the concern of the University in its teaching, the comprehensive training of its students in an environment of freedom, mutual respect, and a spirit of coexistence.
