Established pursuant to the Decree of the 7th November 2013, the Specialised Master’s Degree in Language Sciences aims to provide students high-quality training to ensure mastery of language sciences in general as well as expertise in a particular sector. Besides a core curriculum, the program includes various training routes, each structured around an option, either as preparation for research in a specific sector of language sciences or for one of the various occupations in the field of language.
Duration of Course
Obtaining a Specialised Master’s Degree in Language Sciences requires at least one year of study. The course can, however, be spread over a longer period. When an assessment is passed, the student receives the corresponding number of credits. Credits can be accumulated over 5 years. However, the student is not allowed to re-take the assessments of a course for which they have obtained a grade of at least 12/20 in the previous five academic years.
The program comprises a set of 60 credits distributed as follows:
Compulsory Core Subjects: 15 credits
- Linguistic Approaches to Cognition
- Language Sciences
Optional Module: 30 credits
Within the program, the student chooses a specific theme, developed as part of an option, constituting a coherent set of specific teaching activities worth 30 credits, which characterizes their program cycle. Each option has either a scientific or a more professional nature.
Each option is a minimum of 15-course credits, plus, for options of a more professional nature, specific learning activities account for 15 credits in the sector concerned and, for science-options, a dissertation/final project accounts for 15 credits.
This project is a scientific piece of work characterized by the originality of its subject, its approach, its results and its summarised report. It can have an observational, literary, experimental, or an R&D nature, and can raise exploratory or nomothetic issues from both a speculative and a clinical point of view. It meets the usual scientific criteria of the research domain.
The student submits information concerning the theme of their dissertation/final project and the name of the Director to the Secretariat of the Research Institute for Language Science and Technology by the 31st January after having received explicit approval from the Director. The Board responsible for assessing the dissertation/final project is composed of at least 3 members, including the Director and at least one member from one of the universities of the former Brussels Alliance for Research and Higher Education (AUWB) who is the primary Director.
The specific terms for supervision and assessment of dissertations/final projects are determined by the Board for the Advanced Master’s Degree in Language Sciences.
Compulsory Modules: 15 credits
The student is free to choose a set of subjects that account for 15 credits from a list of courses associated with their option, in compliance with the prerequisites outlined in the course description and provided that the courses chosen are not included in compulsory courses of the program.
Options of a more professional nature lead to skilled trades in the field of language, while scientific modules are designed as preparation for research in language sciences.
Admission onto Other Courses
The optional modules of a more professional nature are intended to allow the student to gain the skills expected of language experts in different professional sectors (inter-linguistic mediation, language teaching intercultural negotiation, etc.). They are not supposed to lead to further studies. Instead, scientific options are a very good (but not mandatory) preparation for doctoral studies, particularly for students interested in pursuing doctoral studies in the field of language, even if language sciences has not been a focus in their previous studies.
