A master's degree is a postgraduate academic degree. One must already have an undergraduate degree to apply for a master's program. Most master's degree program would require students to complete a master's thesis or research paper.

Students in a music instrumental program will normally have the choice of emphasis on one instrument or vocals, and may study subjects such as music theory, composition, ear training and performance. Programs are often geared toward preparing the student for a career as a performing musician.

Teaching varies between solo lessons, lectures and classroom instruction. In addition, there are master classes, chamber music and other specific subjects for different lines.

Graduation from the Master degree programme confers the title Master of music.
