The one-year master's program in Archeology and Cultural History of the Middle East at the Institute of Archaeological Sciences of the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Frankfurt am Main is followed by a four-year bachelor program. The degree program includes five modules - four compulsory and one elective module - in which special scientific and practical training elements are in the foreground.

The study program provides in-depth knowledge of the subject and methods and serves to practice good scientific practice. The students are instructed to make their own scientific contributions in written and oral form and to present them in the university public. It should, if necessary, Even with the involvement of our own work and the research on the extensive written tradition of the ancient Near Eastern cultures, a holistic picture appropriate to the respective question should be developed. Admission to the Master's Program Classical Archeology requires:

  • A successfully completed, eight-semester undergraduate degree at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Frankfurt with archeology and cultural history of the Middle East as a major subject or a successful completion of a content equivalent, at least eight-semester study program at another academic university in Germany.

    In the case of a bachelor's degree in archeology and cultural history of the Near East or An equivalent degree in the same or related field of study with a standard period of study of at least six semesters is granted subject to the condition that additional services be provided until equivalency with the eight-semester Bachelor major at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Frankfurt.

    If there is a first degree with a major in archeology and cultural history of the Middle East with a total of 180CP, then an additional study amounting to 60 CP is to be provided, the design of which is determined by the academic director in consultation with the student. In the case of requirements, the study period is extended to four semesters until the Master's degree is obtained.

  • Language requirements: English and another modern scientific language (active and passive knowledge).
    Proof of English is provided by:
    a) high school diploma, high school diploma or other proof of at least 5 years of schooling in English,
    b) proof of a Level II UNIcert degree,
    c) Evidence of an internet-based TOEFL test iBT, score of at least 87,
    d) Evidence of an IELTS test, score of at least 5.0 or
    e) another proof recognized as equivalent by the Selection Board.

    The knowledge of the second foreign language must comply with level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages ​​(CEFR).
    These are to be proved by one of the following documents:
    a) High school diploma, high school diploma or other proof of usually at least four years of schooling. Proof of three years of school education is sufficient if the language has been taken to completion, which entitles the student to university entrance.
    b) proof of a Level I UNIcert degree,
    c) another proof recognized as equivalent by the Selection Board.

  • Cover letter of at least 3 DIN A4 pages to submit, which outlines the previous course of study and the motivation for a further study reveals.

  • Applicants must attend a counseling interview with an authorized professor or an authorized professor or a qualified instructor. The conversation is logged, a certificate of attendance is issued.   • Proof of successful completion of courses in Ancient Near Eastern Philology (language introduction and reading courses on Akkadian or another ancient Oriental language) of at least 13 CP.

If the application for a Bachelor's degree is not yet available for the Bachelor's degree, the application may instead be based on proof of enrollment and on a special certificate. This must be based on at least 80% of the CP required for the Bachelor's degree, a provisional average grade calculated on the basis of these examinations in accordance with the respective regulations and issued by the authority responsible for granting the certificate.
The examination board decides on the provisional admission.
