Objectives

This Master programme enables students to acquire deeper knowledge in biosciences taking into account new computational and high-throughput experimental technologies. This involves the handling of large amounts of data and thus bioinformatics and network analysis are essential elements in this modern education in biosciences.

What is Systems Biology?

Systems Biology (an extension of Biochemistry and Physiology) wants to understand and model systems: individual cells, organs and whole organisms on the basis of their constituting molecules. It integrates established disciplines in Biosciences and renovates them for the challenges of the future.

Aims of the programme

The Master of Systems Biology combines theoretical and practical education: at least 1,450 hours of practical work in computer labs and wet labs within the University’s Life Sciences Research Unit or in partner institutions (Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH), the Luxembourg Institute of Science & Technology (LIST), and the IGBMC in Strasbourg). At the end of the programme, students will be able:... [-]

Course content

The research domain of biology is very broad, basically covering the full spectrum of the origin and diversity of life and its different levels of biological organization, ranging from cells to ecosystems and the biosphere.Actual topics and challenges such as the conservation of threatened species, global change, sustainable use of natural resources, cloning of organisms, infectious diseases and medical progress find their roots in biology.

Biology also forms a source for numerous conceptual innovations that lead towards new disciplines, from molecular biology and biotechnology up to developing bio-inspired technologies.

Thanks to the interactions with other scientific disciplines such as chemistry, geology, geography and physics, biology forms an exciting study domain that is constantly in evolution and of which the development goes hand in hand with broad developments and challenges within society.... [-]

About the Program

The Master of Science in Biological Sciences program is designed to prepare students for many types of biological work that require advanced training beyond the bachelor's degree, including careers in industry and/or civil service, teaching biological sciences at the elementary, secondary, and community college levels, independent research in the field of specialization, or continued graduate work at other institutions. A research thesis is required.

The Biological Sciences Department at Cal Poly takes Learn by Doing seriously. Over three-fourths of our courses include a lab section. That means our students spend most of their time out in the field collecting data or in the lab running experiments on modern equipment – not sitting at desks.... [-]

Thanks to Darwin, we know the process of evolution has shaped the bewildering variation we see around us. Through this Master's Degree programme students will acquire an explicit evolutionary biological perspective in the study of nature, thereby increasing capacity for understanding patterns and processes, on scales varying from the cellular to the ecosystem level.

Students from this Master's Degree programme in Evolutionary Biology can expect to acquire scientific and analytical skills, expertise in present theories and up-to-date technologies, as well as practical skills including teamwork and interpersonal skills; all in an international environment. After starting with a general overview of evolutionary biology, and what it entails to be a biological researcher, this programme focuses mainly on evolutionary genetics.... [-]

Students participate in intensive advanced and high-level courses in the different fields of biology, which are the most relevant for their specialization, to make them informed about the recent developments and frontline problems. Some 60 % of the time is practical hours (spent on laboratory/field practice and on research) ensuring knowledge of state of the art methods.

The curriculum is assembled from intensive advanced level courses on the theoretical aspects of selected disciplines and special seminar series on problems in a narrower field of science. The program also involves practical courses and a supervised research activity, which is needed for the preparation of the “M.Sc. Thesis”. In the first two semesters emphasis is on theory and basic laboratory or field practice. The third and the fourth semesters are devoted to research and preparation of the thesis. ... [-]

The master’s programme zoology aims at students interested in modern research regarding animal life forms. It conveys an organism-oriented approach as well as the practical application of innovative research methods for analysing the behaviour, body structure, function, development and evolution of animal life forms.

The master’s programme Zoology was introduced in winter semester 2007. The main admission requirement is the completion of a bachelor’s degree or equivalent degree in a closely related discipline at a university or institution of postsecondary education in Austria or abroad.

Based on two compulsory modules, the elective modules allow a specialisation in various directions and methods of zoological research. One main aspect of the programme is the practical scientific training in special courses, seminars and field trips, all of which prepare the student for writing the master's thesis. Scientific methods and techniques (such as confocal microscopy, 3D reconstruction, electron microscopy, and methods used molecular biology), which are the core competencies for professional work inside and outside the university sector, are conveyed in small groups of students.... The Master of Science in Cellular and Molecular Biology is ideal for students who want to pursue or advance careers in the rapidly expanding fields of biotechnology, basic science, and pharmacological research.

Our program gives students the advanced training they need to succeed in these groundbreaking fields.

With constant new discoveries in cellular and molecular biology, an undergraduate degree is no longer enough to keep you advancing professionally. Our program, with its strong emphasis on biochemistry and molecular biology techniques, gives students the advanced training they need to succeed in these groundbreaking fields.

The program has both thesis and non-thesis options. Students who elect the thesis option must carry out an original thesis research project under the guidance of departmental faculty. Students choosing a non-thesis option are required to take a written comprehensive exam in addition to laboratory coursework. The comprehensive exam will assess understanding of the coursework and evaluate one’s ability to synthesize research and theory in the field of cellular and molecular biology and to present this information in an effective written format....
