The MA program in Classical (Music) Performance is designed to provide students with a wide knowledge of playing musical instruments. Basic theoretical subjects such as literature, prosody, history of art, stylistics, music history, folk music, composition theory, concert visiting, composition practice, and analysis are introduced to students. Applied subjects such as chamber music and choir practice are also offered during the program in addition to other fields, depending on the specialization. This part-time 2 year innovative Joint Degree Master Choreography is run jointly by Codarts University of the Arts in Rotterdam and Fontys School of Fine and Performing Arts in Tilburg. The programme is designed to support experienced movement makers from a variety of fields while they carry out research into questions initiating from their current practice. The course occurs within a learning environment that exposes students to a broad range of approaches, movement disciplines and creative domains while supporting them in retaining connections with their own working field. Students are co-creators of the course and will be responsible for shaping the content of particular assignments and for creating a productive learning cohort with their peers. The activity of choral conductors holding a degree belongs to the field of choral art. It involves forming new ensembles, leading different types of choirs, actual conducting work. Basically, it means to head and manage the artistic work of a choir in the long term with high efficiency. In choral work, choral conductors can use their theoretical knowledge, their vocal and partly their instrumental abilities as well. They will be prepared to play an active role in the nourishing choral culture.
Besides general music theory and music history classes, the training will introduce students to the technique of choral conducting as well as to theoretical and practical issues related to the human voice, voice formation and maintenance, the history of choral music, repertoire, different styles and all the related know-how in all branches of choir music.
