Introduction
History -- M.A.
Lehigh University's graduate studies in the Department of History offer training in preparation for a career in research and teaching, as well as non-academic pursuits. The overarching theme of the program is transnational history. Faculty members offer courses related to this theme across the department and over various geographical regions and chronological periods. Coursework focuses on developing both the fundamentals of the historiographical analysis and historical research methods.
The MA in history is designed to be a generalist degree that can prepare students for many careers or more advanced graduate work. Graduates work in a variety of areas, including:
- secondary education,
- public history,
- library services, and
- business and government positions.
The program provides training for those interested in teaching global, transnational US, Atlantic World, European, African, Middle Eastern, or Latin American histories at the secondary or community college level and for those pursuing advanced graduate work, a career in research, or college-level teaching. Graduate seminars are small, and students have close access to faculty mentors throughout their program. Most incoming students benefit from financial aid, partial tuition remission scholarships, half-year teaching assistantships, and a small number of full fellowships. Outside of coursework, students are strongly encouraged to attend the department's seminars and visiting speaker lectures, or deliver informal research-based discussions. A small number of professional workshops oriented to graduate students are also offered each year.
