Introduction
The International Master in Security, Intelligence and Strategic Studies (IMSISS) is a 24 month Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree (EMJMD) developed by a consortium of four European universities – University of Glasgow (the UK, leader), Dublin City University (Ireland, degree awarding partner), Charles University (degree-awarding partner) and OTH Regensburg (Germany). It is a unique interdisciplinary program offering students cutting-edge training in several relevant security areas. On the part of Charles University, the program is administered by the Department of Security Studies of the Institute of Political Studies at our Faculty.
Students on this degree program will examine a broad range of contemporary security challenges, such as terrorism, civil war and conflict, mass migration, energy supply security, cyber security, and new technologies, and transnational and serious organized crime. Students will also explore the intelligence and strategic approaches used by governmental and non-governmental actors to combat these threats.
The degree adopts a unique approach to the study of security by combining theoretical, applied, and empirical knowledge and skillsets. Students will have the opportunity to meet with and work alongside a range of academics and researchers from international partner universities and think tanks from around the world, as well as practitioner experts from governmental and industry security defense sectors.
Why Study IMSISS
International security presents complex, challenging realities for a wide range of actors from nation-states and international organizations, to multi-national corporations. Globalization and increased interdependency have radically changed the way we understand security in relation to the state, society, the economy, and even the biosphere.
There is a growing demand for greater attention and coordinated responses from the international community, including not only individual countries but also international organizations such as the European Union (EU), the African Union (AU), the United Nations (UN), and security alliances such as NATO. To support these organizations there is a need for knowledgeable, well-informed experts with the skills to not only react to crises but to identify and anticipate the threats and challenges that create crises. These experts can and should come from civilian (e.g. academia, governmental, non-governmental, and private sectors) as well as military backgrounds.
Bridging these ‘expert’ security communities and ensuring opportunities for dedicated training and shared knowledge, experiences and best practice is the purpose of this IMSISS degree program.

Career Opportunities
Collaborative Work Placement Scheme
All IMSISS students have the opportunity to apply for a work placement via the program’s Collaborative Work Placement Scheme. The scheme provides 20-25 six-week work placements linked to a student’s independent study. Students apply on a competitive basis and if successful are matched with a placement partner. We do not guarantee that all applicants will be successfully placed and students are welcome to identify their own placement or internship opportunities.
In recent years, students on our Collaborative Work Placement Scheme have partnered with a wide range of organizations across Europe and globally.
Other Placement, Internship & Traineeship Opportunities
Masters students recognize the importance of making connections outside the classroom. Work Placements, Internships, and Traineeships provide students with the opportunity to expand their skills, network with professionals and make an impact in their field.
The University of Glasgow Careers Service hosts an internship hub that provides a list of UK-based opportunities.
Consortium partners actively seek internships for our students. Any opportunities which become available are passed on to students and will be notified to IMSISS students via the program Moodle site.
